What Services Does Hospice Offer Beyond Medical Support?
Patient Assistance Beyond Medical Support
Star City Hospice provides far beyond basic hospice care for our patients. We believe that providing a patient-focused service allows our patients to have the most comfortable experience. We also provide additional services for families and loved ones. This includes counseling, bereavement services, spiritual guidance, additional care services, child counseling services, and more.
Our team provides expert care that focuses both on adaptive medical care and the emotional needs of the patient. Our staff has a collective seven decades of palliative care, and we have developed strong relationships with each hospital in the area. We provide extended support to loved ones after hospice care has come to an end.

Respite Care for Caregivers and Loved Ones
When loved ones are having health problems and are undergoing hospice care it can be a difficult time for everyone. Oftentimes family members and caregivers want to remain strong throughout the entire process, however, this can be exhausting. When taking care of a loved one it’s important to remember that you must take care of yourself too. Respite Care is a short-term term more hands-on service we provide that allows the family to step away. This could give them the opportunity to attend an event, travel, attend a wedding, or simply take some time to rest and process their emotions.
Supporting Patients and Families
Medical services can often feel impersonal and disconnected from the patient and their family. Hospice care and palliative care are such deeply personal experiences that we focus on providing medical assistance in a way that puts you first. Through regular conversations and updates the patient and family are able to personalize their care so we are always providing exactly what they need. Through our patient-focused approach to hospice care, we allow each patient and their family to determine the types of medical support they receive. Unnecessary hospitalizations are stressful for everyone and can have a serious impact on the patient’s health. Through individualized care, we are able to manage symptoms at home and avoid unnecessary trips to your hospital. We utilize all of our resources to make the life of your loved one as rich as possible as they go through hospice care.

Services Concerning Bereavement
Facing the death of a family member is a long process for many. Bereavement services allow you the opportunity to receive additional support after the passing of a loved one. For up to 13 months our bereavement support services are available as you process and cope with your loss. During bereavement support, you will receive phone calls and mailings every few months to check in with how you’re doing. We also offer an annual Memorial service as a way to honor your loved one. During these conversations, we can offer additional support and resources. Additional support can be offered through phone conversations or in-person meetings. Anniversaries, birthdays, and other important days can be difficult times. Our bereavement support is available throughout the year for momentous times that can bring up emotions that are hard to face.
Supporting Children & Teens
End-of-life grief is a completely different experience for younger people. Oftentimes children and teens can be left out of the family’s grieving process. Watching a loved one go through end-of-life care may have lasting emotional effects on younger family members. In circumstances where the child has never experienced loss, the entire process can be very confusing.
Counselors that focus on the care of children and teens can help them go through the process of grief, and provide resources designed for younger family members. Understanding and coping with watching a family member receive hospice care starts with being open, having healthy discussions, and providing them with age-appropriate counseling. As healthcare providers, we also see great value in helping children understand the benefits of counseling and mental health services at a young age. We offer a safe and supportive emotional environment for children and teens to express themselves freely.
Spiritual Support and Counseling
Receiving support in all areas of life uplifts the patient and their families during hospice care. Star City Hospice provides spiritual counseling services in order to help families process the circumstances occurring with their loved ones. While emotional strength and family unity are often at the core of the hospice care journey, it’s important to recognize that processing grief and loss should not be overlooked.
With spiritual support, the families of patients are able to spend time understanding their emotions and processing the situation through their own personal spirituality. There are unique options for everyone, whether you’re looking for general spiritual support or are seeking counseling from a religious counselor.
As part of a family support system, it’s important that we don’t deny our own health, and allow ourselves space to focus on being centered and finding peace, even in the face of a difficult time. Our spiritual counselors are available to help you on the difficult journey you’re facing.

Is Hospice The Right Choice?
When a patient begins hospice care they are typically showing signs they are near the end of their life. In hospice care, their illness has progressed enough that they require increased care. Hospice care provides management for pain and symptoms, helps administer medications, and daily care tasks, and can provide assistance with other medical needs.
